Jayme Bazile led the team with 13 kills.
Lady Wildcats outlast St. Thomas-Houston
After allowing University of St. Thomas-Houston to rally and extend the match, the Wiley College volleyball team rebounded to claim a five-set Red River Athletic Conference victory (25-22, 23-25, 25-14, 15-25, 15-10) Friday at Alumni Gymnasium.
With the victory, the Lady Wildcats (7-5, 4-2 in RRAC) snapped a two-match losing streak. It is their first five-set victory this season. The win is also Wiley College's second-straight against the Lady Celts and improves to 11-7 in the overall series.
The first two sets were competitive with each team earning a win. The Lady Wildcats recorded 10 kills in 25 attack attempts to gain the upper hand in the match. The Lady Celts (7-9, 4-3 in RRAC) hit .444 in the fourth set and tied the match. Wiley College recovered and took the fifth set.
"We had to come together," Jayme Bazile (SR/Beaumont, Texas) said. "We had to dig deep and trust each other and we did what we needed to do, to get this win."
Bazile led the Lady Wildcats' attack with 13 kills. She also led the Lady Wildcats' block with four blocks (one solo and six block assists). Taylor Barnes (FR/Phoenix, Arizona) contributed 11 kills and six block assists. Alexia Souza (SO/Taubate, Sao Paulo, Brazil) helped set up Wiley College's hitters with 28 assists. Sydnie Beckett (JR/Beaumont, TX) tallied 17 off the bench. Bozhanova and Souza each contributed two service aces.
"Jayme Bazile played awesome tonight," head coach Mike MacNeill said. "She had 13 kills in 31 attempts. She was solid on the right side and on the block. She shut down their big hitters. Both of St. Thomas' big hitters had negative hitting percentages. Taylor Barnes played well."
Defensively, Tsvetelina Bozhanova (JR/Razlog, Bulgaria) led the team with 11 digs. Miyah Keller (JR/Beaumont, TX) followed with 10. Olena Fedorenko (SO/Sevastopol, Ukraine) led the team with eight block assists. Renata Da Silva (SO/Sao Paulo, Brazil) followed with seven.
The Lady Wildcats begin a four-match road trip on October 13, when they visit first-place Our Lady of the Lake University. Wiley College visits Huston-Tillotson University on October 14.
