Moriba Morain ran the fastest trial time at 20.82
No. 3 Wildcats send three to 200-meter dash final
GULF SHORES, Alabama – The No. 3 Wiley College men's track and field team punched its first tickets to the finals with three qualifiers in the 200-meter dash on the first day of the 66th Annual NAIA Men's Track and Field Championship at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium Friday.
Moriba Morain (JR/Pleasance Park, Trinidad ) ran the fastest time overall in the 200-meter dash trial at 20.82 – which is .06 seconds from the Wiley College school record. Kimorie Shearman (FR/St. Vincent) earned a spot with his time of 21.18. Quinn-Lee Ralph (SR/Trinidad &Tobago) earned a spot in the final with his time of 21.19. The trio will run in the final at 5:20 p.m. Saturday.
The Wildcats had high hopes to qualify for other finals but it didn't pan out. Wiley College looked like it was well on its way to the 4 x 100-meter relay final but fumbled the final exchange – which resulted in the relay team being disqualified because the exchange occurred outside the defined passing zone.
Wiley College entered the 4 x 800-meter relay trial with the best regular season time in their heat. The Wildcats got off to a slow start. Shevan Parks (FR/Jamaica) made up ground and Laban Kandie (FR/Kenya) ran a strong first lap. He got passed up on the second lap by two runners and the Wildcats didn't recover finishing in 7:49.
Kendell Perouza (SR/Barataria, Trinidad) ran his final 400-meter hurdle race in 54.43. Marbeq Edgar (JR/Choiseul, St. Lucia) – who received his trophy for winning United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South-Central Track Athlete of the Year finished the 1,500-meter run in 4:02.18. Oraine Palmer (SO/Kingston, Jamaica) ran 21.39 in the 200-meter dash trial.
Before the running events began, Quinn-Lee Ralph was honored as a Buffalo-Funds Champion of Character Award recipient.
The Wildcats hope to advance to more finals on Friday. Edgar will run in the 800-meter run trial at 2:20 p.m. Palmer, Ralph, Morain and Machael Mark (SR/Princess Town, Trinidad) will run in the 100-meter dash trial at 3:10 p.m. Shearman and Rajay Hamilton (JR/Jamaica) will compete in the 400-meter dash trial. The 4 x 400-meter relay will run in its trial at 8:15 p.m.
