Men's Track and Field heads to Leon Johnson Invitational

The Wiley University men's track and field team is off to Northwestern State University for the Leon Johnson Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Walter P. Ledet Track and Field Complex in Natchitoches, La., for its final tune-up before the 2024 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

Live results are available. The link is listed in the men's track and field schedule on wileyathletics.com. Friday's events start at 3 p.m. with the long jump and shot put. Saturday's schedule starts with the hammer throw at 11 a.m. Running events will start at 1 p.m. with the 3,000-meter steeplechase. 

Isaac Jenkins is looking to qualify for the 2024 NAIA Outdoor Men's Track and Field National Championship in the long jump. His personal best of 7.13 meters was 0.02 meters short of the 'B' qualifying standard. In the high jump, his personal best of 1.86 meters is a couple of heights short of the 'B' qualifying standard of 2.02 meters.

The Wildcats have qualified for nationals in three track events. Ronald Garrett and Brian Fisher have advanced in the 110-meter hurdles. Garrett's best time of 14.58 seconds is tied for 14th in the NAIA. Fisher ranks 23rd with his personal best of 14.79 seconds. The 4 x 100-meter relay team of Micah Ruben, Garrett, Harold Overton, Tyvonne Allen and Justice Northern will look to improve their time of 41.40, which is 19th in the NAIA. Wiley will run two 4 x 400-meter relay teams looking to best its time of 3:14.69, which ranks eighth in the nation.

Tyvonne Allen hopes to qualify for nationals in the 400-meter dash for the second straight season. His time of 49.03 is 0.65 seconds from the 'B' qualifying standard. Ruben is 0.58 seconds from the 'B' qualifying standard in the 100-meter dash.

Along with the host Northwestern State, Wiley will compete against NCAA schools Alcorn State University, Grambling State University and University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Texas College will be the only other school from the NAIA competing.
