Baseball opens home schedule against No. 19 Science and Arts

Series Notes

The Wiley College baseball team will play their first home games of the 2023 season against No. 19 University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday at Marshall High School baseball field.

The games are being played at Marshall High School due to field conditions at Airport Park following several days of rain during the week. Admission will be ten dollars for adults, five dollars for students and two dollars for Wiley College students who have their ID. Live statistics will be available and the links will be available in the baseball schedule on wileyathletics.com.

The Wildcats (1-0) dominated Texas College 28-1 on January 27. The lopsided nature of the game allowed everyone to get action. Eleven players got base hits. Jhan Carlos Javier and Matthew Drabbant each got two hits. Wiley College tied the single game program record with five home runs. Javier, Marquis Kuykendall, Drabbant, Bryce Garrett and Alexander San Miguel went deep.

On the mound, Isaac Burciaga, Kai Woodard, Ivan Del Villar, Jalen Porter and AJ Garcia held the Steers to one unearned run on five hits, walked one and struck out 11.

Sunday will be the first time the Wildcats have hosted a ranked team since 2019 when it play Louisiana State University at Shreveport, which was ranked No. 9. They won the series opener over the Pilots.

Science & Arts (2-1) advanced to the NAIA Opening Round last season – finishing with a 36-15 record. It opened the season taking two out of three against Our Lady of the Lake University. Gage Gaunt went 4-for-10 with a double, triple and four runs batted in. Christopher Martinez went 4-for-9 with three doubles and four RBIs.

Megumi Fukuda went five innings in his first start of the season. He gave up two hits, three walks and struck out four. Josh Harrel earned the win in the second game – allowing two runs, four hits, two walks and struck out three.

This will be the first time the Wildcats and Drovers have met on the diamond. The teams were scheduled to play each other in 2020 but the games were rained out.
