Baseball visits Tougaloo College in non-conference doubleheader

The Wiley College baseball team will get its first look at Gulf Coast Athletic Conference school Tougaloo College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday at Earl Sanders Field.

The Wildcats and Bulldogs will meet in GCAC play on April 15 and 16 at Airport Park. No coverage information was provided for Saturday's doubleheader.

Wiley College (5-6) is coming off a doubleheader against NCAA Division I program Texas Southern University on Tuesday. On February 17 and 18 the Wildcats won two out three games against Champion Christian College.

Kai Woodard hits his third home run of the season and recorded four hits, scored three runs and drove in three. He moved his batting average to .480 which is second in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Jhan Carlos Javier tallied six hits, including two doubles and a triple, three runs and one run batted in. Luis Mares and Gabriel Garcia each recorded two hits in the second game of the series.

On the mound, Jalen Porter threw his second consecutive complete game and set a career-high 12 strikeouts to pick up his second victory of the season. Ivan Del Villar notched his second victory – limiting the Tigers to two runs on six hits. A.J. Garcia earned his first save retiring six of seven batters.

Tougaloo College (1-8) picked up its first win of the season in a 17-16 extra-inning victory over Tuskegee University on Tuesday. In their previous eight games, the Bulldogs lost by five or more in six of them, including two by double-digits.

Christian Borders leads the Bulldogs with a .455 batting average. He has five hits, three runs and two RBI. Matt Jones follows with a .389 batting average. He has seven hits, three runs and a stolen base. The rest of the team with significant at-bats is batting below .250.

Simar Thomas has made three starts and has been tagged for 26 runs with 18 earned. He has walked two and struck out seven. De'Everett Ross has pitched 7 1/3 innings, giving up five runs, 10 hits, five walks and struck out six. Caleb Carter earned the victory for Tougaloo on Tuesday pitching two innings and striking out three.

This will be the first time the Wildcats and Bulldogs have met on the diamond since 2020. Wiley College has won six of seven against Tougaloo College.
