Baseball visits Dillard University

Series Notes

The Wiley College baseball team will head to Dillard University for its third Gulf Coast Athletic Conference series Friday and Sunday.

Friday's game will be played at 3 p.m. at the Riverside Academy in Reserve, Louisiana. Due to expected rain on Friday and Saturday, the final two games will be played on Sunday at Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans. The Wildcats (13-12, 5-1 GCAC) took two out of three games against Rust College to take sole possession of first in the conference. They hold a game lead over Rust College, Dillard University and Philander Smith College. They lead the conference in batting average (.299), hits (215), home runs (19), runs (221), slugging percentage (.457), earned run average (6.72), strikeouts (193) and fielding percentage (.938).

Ivan Del Villar drove in 10 runs against Rust College and hit his first two home runs. He recorded four hits in the series. Orenthal Lewis had three hits, scored two runs and drove in two. Jhan Carlos Javier leads the GCAC with a .448 batting average, which ranks 18th in the NAIA. He went 6-for-9 with eight runs, two doubles and five RBIs. He also leads the conference with 24 RBIs and a .821 slugging percentage. Luis Mares batted at the bottom of the order for the first time this season and went 4-for-10 and scored six runs.

On the mound, Daniel Cox picked up his second win and first save. He struck out 10 in his start on Sunday, marking the second time he has tallied double-digit strikeouts. Isaac Burciaga finished off Sunday's game to pick up his first career save.

Dillard (8-25, 4-2 GCAC) won its second series by taking two out of three against Tougaloo College. It is in its inaugural season and has won five of its last seven. Jalen Ayers went 5-for-7 with eight runs and seven RBIs. He leads the team with a .349 batting average and 18 RBIs. Ty'Mitchell McCollough leads the Bleu Devils with 31 runs.

Jorge Guerra won GCAC Pitcher of the Week after earning two wins and striking out 11 in 10 innings. He is 3-6 in nine appearances and seven starts. Guerra has struck out 45 batters. Brandon Dickerson is 2-3 in five starts. He has struck out 15.
