Baseball heads to Philander Smith
The Wiley College baseball team will visit Philander Smith College for its fourth Gulf Coast Athletic Conference series Friday and Saturday at Lamar Porter Field.
Friday's doubleheader will begin at noon and Saturday's finale will also start at noon. Updates will be posted on Wiley College Athletics Social Media Accounts.
The Wildcats (13-15, 5-4 GCAC) are looking to bounce back after losing all three games at Dillard University last weekend. Kai Woodard recorded two hits with a run and RBI. Luis Mares also tallied two hits, including an RBI triple. Daniel Cox pitched his first complete game in the finale on Sunday and struck out six. Jerrius Vickers threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in Game 2.
Wiley College is looking to gain ground in the conference race, as it trails Rust College and Dillard University by two games. It is tied with Philander Smith for third.
The Panthers (9-14, 5-4 GCAC) lost two out of three games at Tougaloo College. All three games were decided by a total of four runs. Mitchell Brown leads Philander Smith with a .339 batting average. Ten of his 19 hits have gone for extra bases with eight doubles, a triple and home run. Brown has scored 14 runs and drove in eight. Juan Zorola leads the team with 15 RBIs and is tied for third on the team with 14 runs. Angel Figueroa is hitting .309 with 15 runs and 13 RBIs. He is the reigning GCAC Player of the Week.
On the mound, Aadity Sur is 3-2 in 10 appearances. He has two complete games, 13 walks and 18 strikeouts.
The Wildcats and Panthers will meet in Marshall on April 22 and 23.
