Baseball hosts No. 24 Southwestern Assemblies of God University

The Wiley College baseball team will get ready for its final two Gulf Coast Athletic Conference series by hosting No. 24 Southwestern Assemblies of God University at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Airport Park.

Live statistics will be available and the link can be found in the baseball schedule on wileyathletics.com. This will be the second time the Wildcats have hosted an opponent ranked in the NAIA Top 25 poll. University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma was ranked No. 19 when it visited on February 5.

It will also be the second time the Wildcats and Lions have matched up this season. Wiley College fell in both games of a doubleheader on February 28. Allan Mendoza hit a two-run home run in the first game. Emanuel Gutierrez went 1-for-3 with a run and Darion Wallace went 2-for-4 with a run. In the second game, Kai Woodard went 2-for-2 with a double, run and RBI. Jhan Carlos Javier hit a two-RBI double. Jalen Porter struck out in three innings.

The Wildcats (16-15, 8-4 GCAC) are coming off a sweep at Philander Smith College. They hit six home runs in the series, outscoring the Panthers 31-16. Ivan Del Villar went 10-for-14 with six doubles, two home runs, seven RBIs and six runs. Javier moved into a tie for second with his fifth home run of the season in the opener. Woodard hit his fourth and Molina hit his second in the finale. Julian Rosales hit his first home run of the season in Game 2.

Daniel Cox pitched his second straight complete game in the opener – recording three strikeouts. Isaac Burciaga picked up his fifth win of the season – which leads the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Jalen Porter earned a win and save striking out two in 8.1 innings in two games out of the bullpen.

The Lions (26-14, 11-4 SAC) are coming off being swept by Oklahoma City University, being outscored 25-12. Matt Daiy leads the Lions with a .361 batting average. He has scored 29 runs and drove in 14. Seven of his 35 hits have gone for extra bases, including three home runs. Timothy Compomizzi and Bryson Collins lead the team with 26 RBIs.

Michael Watson is 8-1 with four complete games. He has struck out 99 in 69 innings. Matthew Hickey is 5-4 with a 4.08 ERA. He has 65 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings. Cade Hendricks has nine saves.

In the February 28 games against Wiley College, Justin Delossantos went 2-for-3 with four RBIs in the first game. Compomizzi went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs. JV Verdin was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run. Reagan Smith earned the win, pitching three innings and striking out two.

Daiy went 3-for-4 in the second game. Five players had RBIs. Collins and Craig Venable each scored two runs. Trevor Proefrock earned the win pitching 4  2/3 innings. Hendricks got the save getting the last two outs.

The Wildcats haven't beat the Lions since 2019 and trail the overall series 26-25.
