Baseball dominates Tougaloo in finale
The Wiley College baseball team took the lead in the first inning and didn't look back – securing a sweep with a 17-2 run-rule victory Sunday at Airport Park.
With the win, the Wildcats are tied with Rust College for first in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Dillard University trails by a half game as it concludes its series against Oakwood University on Monday afternoon. The Bulldogs fall to fifth in the conference, trailing Philander Smith by a half game.
Wiley College's first three batters reached. Jhan Carlos Javier drove in Allan Mendoza and Kai Woodard with a triple to right field. Ivan Del Villar laid down a squeeze bunt to score Javier. With two outs in the second, Darion Wallace drew a walk, Mendoza was hit by a pitch and Woodard walked to load the bases. All three runners came home when Javier hit his second triple to right field – becoming the first Wildcat to record multiple triples in a game since Keenan Allison accomplished the feat in 2014.
In the fourth inning, Wiley College brought home six runs on four hits. Wallace singled with one out and stole second. He scored on a passed ball when Tougaloo's catcher Dylan Daniels displayed his frustration because he thought the umpire kept him from getting the ball. Mendoza and Woodard walked and Del Villar was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mares brought home Mendoza with a single. Woodard and Del Villar scored on a single by Marquis Kuykendall. A passed ball scored Kuykendall.
With the game in hand in the sixth inning, head coach Kendrick Biggs began pinch hitting for his starters. With two outs, Abiel Trevino, who hit for Molina singled. A balk advanced him to second. Caidin Franklin who came in as a defensive replacement walked. Johed Ortega pinch hit for Wallace and walked to load the bases. Dylan Washington drove in Trevino and Franklin with a single. Ortega scored on a throwing error.
Jalen Porter who closed out the second game, started and went five innings. He held the Bulldogs to two runs on three hits, walked one and struck out eight, picking up his fourth victory. Coren Lewis and Noah Codina each threw a scoreless inning.
Javier went 3-for-4 with a run and six RBIs. Woodard scored four runs, with a hit and two walks. Mendoza scored four runs, reaching on three walks. Mares went 2-for-2 with a run and RBI. Wallace went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
The Wildcats will visit NCAA Division I school Tarleton State University for an exhibition game at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. They will conclude Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play with a three-game series against Philander Smith College on Saturday and Sunday.
