Baseball wins opener against No. 21 Texas Wesleyan

FT. WORTH, Texas - Wiley University baseball player Ivan Del Villar drove in two runs and recorded the final two outs to secure a 5-2 victory over No. 21 Texas Wesleyan University in the first game Friday at Sycamore Park.

It is the Wildcats' first victory over a ranked opponent since beating No. 9 Louisiana State University at Shreveport in 2019. It is the program's first victory over the Rams since 2011.

Del Villar went 2-for-4 with a double and a run in addition to his two RBIs. He took over in the seventh inning with the tying run on deck. Del Villar struck out the first batter. After giving up a walk he got the final batter to ground out for his first career save.

For the second consecutive game, Wiley struck first. Eddie Garza and Jacob Perez were hit by pitches. Ryan Ready advanced Garza to third with a ground ball. Del Villar picked up his first RBI with a single to center.

The Wildcats (2-5) added two runs in the third. Kai Woodard led off the inning by reaching on an error to third. Ready's sacrifice bunt moved him to second. Del Villar doubled to score Woodard. Del Villar stole third and scored on a passed ball.

In the fourth inning, Perez walked with one out. Woodard singled to move Perez into scoring position. Ready brought Perez home with a single to left.

Texas Wesleyan got on the board with a solo home run by Hayden Hutchens. The Wildcats added a run in the seventh inning. Amir Mason doubled, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

Isaac Burciaga made his second start and went four innings. He only allowed a hit and two walks and struck out three. Nick Rodriguez pitched 2 1/3 innings and struck out two batters. 

The Wildcats fell 22-5 in Game 2. They will play a doubleheader tomorrow against No. 15 Ave Maria University at Sycamore Park.
