Baseball opens GCAC Play against Dillard University

The Wiley University baseball team begins Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play at home with a three-game series against the defending tournament champion Dillard University on Saturday and Sunday at Airport Park.

The doubleheader on Saturday will start at 2 p.m. to allow the field more time to dry after Friday's rain. The first pitch for Sunday's finale will be at noon. Live statistics will be available for all three games. This is the first time the Wildcats opened conference play at home since 2015. 

They are coming off a 15-3 loss at Texas A&M University-Texarkana on Tuesday. Abel Rodriguez Jr. and Jhan Carlos Javier hit RBI doubles. Ivan Del Villar doubled and scored a run. Ryan Ready and Allan Mendoza each got hits and scored runs. 

Ready ranks third in the GCAC with a .385 batting average and second with a .611 slugging percentage. He ranks in the top 10 with three doubles, a triple and nine RBI. Keyon Guillory and Jalen Porter rank in the top 10 in the conference with 19 and 16 strikeouts, respectively.

Dillard (4-13) is coming off a split in a four-game series against Madonna University. Jalen Ayers leads the Bleu Devils with a .359 batting average. He has eight RBI, seven runs and six stolen bases. Ty'Mitchell McCollough leads the team with nine RBI. He has scored eight runs and is batting .264. Jorge Guerra leads the team with 26 1/3 innings pitched and 31 strikeouts. 

In their inaugural season, the Bleu Devils went 22-30, won the 2023 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship and reached the NAIA Opening Round. Trennis Grant is in his second season leading the program.

The Wildcats (3-13) lost all four games against the Bleu Devils last season with three in the regular season on the road. The teams met in the GCAC Baseball Championship with the Wildcats falling 8-5. This series will be the first time the programs have met in Marshall.
