Baseball heads to Tougaloo College
The Wiley University baseball team will play its first Gulf Coast Athletic Conference road series when it travels to Tougaloo College for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday at Earl Sanders Field.
Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. The finale on Sunday is also slated for a 1 p.m. start. The games will be streamed on the Tougaloo College Athletics YouTube channel.
The Wildcats (8-13, 3-0 GCAC) are coming off a sweep over Texas College on Tuesday, which extended their season-longest winning streak to five games. Wiley hit five home runs in the doubleheader with two being hit by Jhan Carlos Javier, who has homered in four straight games. Kai Woodard hit his second home run in the first game. Brendan Mendoza and Eddie Garza hit their first career home runs.
Daniel Cox and Jaylen Cream picked up their first victories of the season. Cox only walked one batter and struck out eight in Game 1. Cream tossed five innings and struck out six batters.
The Bulldogs (6-20, 2-1 GCAC) opened conference play by taking two out of three against Philander Smith University. They followed with two losses against NCAA Division I institution Mississippi Valley State University.
Khilan Magee leads the team with a .400 batting average. He has 16 runs and 12 RBI. De'Everette Ross leads the team with 14 RBIs. Travarez Thomas is hitting .350 with 19 runs, 10 RBI, five doubles and two triples.
Caleb Carter is the ace of Tougaloo's rotation with a 3.79 earned run average. He threw a no-hitter against Southeastern Baptist College. In 40 1/3 innings, Carter has struck out 40 batters.
The Wildcats and Bulldogs will meet for the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth time this weekend. It will be their second meeting as GCAC opponents. Wiley swept the first meeting at Airport Park last season, outscoring Tougaloo 39-12. It will be the third time the schools have met in Mississippi. The Wildcats took two out of three games in 2020 and split a nonconference doubleheader last season.
