Baseball subjugates Tougaloo College in series finale
TOUGALOO, Miss. - The Wiley University baseball team hit four home runs to close the series against Tougaloo College with a 15-1 victory Monday at Earl Sanders Jr. Field.
The Wildcats (11-13, 6-0 GCAC) extend their season-long winning streak to eight games. It's the second straight game and third overall, in which it defeated its opponent by ten or more runs.
Ivan Del Villar homered twice, giving him five for the season. His first came in the first inning, which put Wiley up 3-0. He hit his second in the fifth inning, becoming the first Wildcat to have two or more in a game since accomplishing the feat against Philander Smith last season. Ryan Ready hit his third home run of the season in the second inning. He drove in five runs on three hits. The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference leader Jhan Carlos Javier pounded his sixth of the season in the sixth inning. It was his sixth home run in the last seven games.
Eddie Garza had two hits, scored four runs, stole four bases and drove in two runs with a single in the second. Amir Mason went 2-for-3 with an RBI single and scored a run.
Wiley took the lead in the first inning. Garza led off by being hit by the pitch. He stole second and two groundballs brought him home. Javier extended the inning with a single, allowing Del Villar to add two runs with his first blast.
Mason led off the second with a single. He advanced on an error during a pickoff attempt. Kai Woodard was hit by the pitch. Both runners advanced on Abel Rodriguez's bunt. Garza's single brought them home. Ready's home run increased the lead to 7-0.
Five runs in the sixth inning put the run-rule in effect. Ready hit an RBI single. Then he executed a double steal with Perez, who scored. Javier's home run scored Ready. Mason hit an RBI single with two outs, increasing the lead to 13.
Jalen Porter started and picked up his first win of the season. In six innings, he gave up a run on two hits and struck out three. He received help from his defense, which turned a double play in the fifth inning.
The Wildcats will head to NCAA Division I institution Grambling State University on Wednesday for an exhibition game. They will resume GCAC play against Rust College with a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
