Javier wins GCAC Player of the Week
After taking the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference lead in home runs, Wiley University baseball player Jhan Carlos Javier claims Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for March 11-17.
Javier homered in both games against Texas College on Tuesday, which marked four straight games with a home run. He is the first player since 2019 to homer in both games of a doubleheader and the first to homer in three or more consecutive games since 2017. Javier hit a solo home run in the first game and a three-run blast in the second game.
He hit his third home run in the second game against Tougaloo College, with a two-run blast in the first inning that was part of a 14-run onslaught by the Wildcats. In the finale, which was scheduled for Sunday but played on Monday due to rain, Javier hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning of a 15-1 victory.
For the week, Javier hit .429 and posted a 1.071 slugging percentage. He leads the GCAC with six home runs and ranks fifth with 20 RBIs. Javier's .491 batting average would be second in the conference if he had enough plate appearances to qualify.
This award is the fourth for Wiley University. Ivan Del Villar won Player of the Week last week. Keyon Guillory won Pitcher of the Week last week and February 4-10.
The Wildcats are on an eight-game winning streak and are in first place in the GCAC. They host the defending regular season champion Rust College on Saturday and Sunday.
