Baseball overwhelms Oakwood, remains unbeaten in GCAC

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The first-place Wiley University baseball team took control early in 22-9, 13-1 and 14-1 victories over Oakwood University Thursday and Friday at John Hunt Park.

The Wildcats (17-14, 12-0 GCAC) improve to 7-6 on the road after sweeping their fourth Gulf Coast Athletic Conference series. They hold a 3.5 games lead over Talladega College.

THURSDAY

GAME 1

Allan Mendoza went 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs. Amir Mason went 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs and a RBI. Jacob Perez recorded two hits, including a double, two runs and three RBI. Jhan Carlos Javier went 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Kai Woodard hit his third home run, scored three runs and drove in three.

Isaac Burciaga picked up his fourth win, striking out seven batters in four innings. After allowing four runs on three hits in the first, he only hit one batter in the next four. Chance Guidry pitched 1 1/3 innings and Corey Grant got the final two outs.

Wiley fell behind 4-0, after giving up two home runs in the first inning. In the second inning, Mendoza hit an RBI single and Perez brought home two with a double to tie the game. The Wildcats broke the game open with 11 runs in the third inning.

GAME 2

The Wildcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. Perez hit two RBI doubles. Mendoza hit a RBI double, Ivan Del Villar hit a two-RBI single and Anthony Castaneda and Ryan Ready hit RBI singles. Emanuel Gutierrez hit an RBI single in the fourth. Tyson Minter hit a two-RBI single in the fifth.

Keyon Guillory won his fourth straight start and threw his second complete game. He gave up one run on three hits and struck out 11, that was his second game with double-digit strikeouts.

Mendoza went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Perez went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Castaneda went 2-for-3. Abel Rodriguez went 1-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and three stolen bases.

FRIDAY

Mendoza went 3-for-4 with four runs, three RBI and a double. Ready went 3-for-5 with a run and three RBI. Del Villar went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI. 

Jaylen Cream picked up his second win in his first start during GCAC play. He allowed an unearned run on four hits and struck out 10. 

The Wildcats struck first with an RBI double by Ready. An error in the second inning expanded their lead to two. An error pulled Oakwwod within one. With one out in the fourth, Castaneda reached on an error. Ajari Camp courtesy ran, stole second and advanced to third on an error. He scored on Rodriguez's groundball to first. RBI doubles by Mendoza in the fourth and Jhan Carlos Javier in the seventh increased the lead to 6-1. Seven runs in the eighth inning sealed the game.

Wiley will play its final home game on Tuesday against Texas A&M University-Texarkana at 2 p.m. It will resume GCAC play on Saturday when it travels to Talladega College.
