Baseball falls in final games against Houston-Victoria

VICTORIA, Texas - The Wiley University baseball team recorded its first hits and runs but still seeks its first wins after 2-1 and 14-5 losses against the University of Houston-Victoria on Saturday at Riverside Stadium.

The Wildcats (0-3) have been swept in their opening series thrice in the last four seasons. They have lost six of their previous seven games since the end of last season.

GAME 2

With one out in the third inning, Ajari Camp tripled to center field. Abel Rodriguez Jr. brought him home with a single to right field. With two outs, Amir Mason extended the inning with a single. The inning ended with a flyout.

Isaac Burciaga made his first start of the season and held the Jaguars scoreless in the first two innings with two strikeouts. In the third inning, he struggled with command - hitting three batters. With runners on the corners with one out, Houston-Victoria executed a double steal to tie the game. An error allowed Cristian Garcia to advance to third. A single brought him home.

Keyon Guillory took over in the fourth and threw three scoreless innings. He only allowed one hit and struck out six batters. The Wildcats could not take advantage as only one runner reached base in the last three innings.

 

GAME 3

Jalen Porter made his first start and labored as he could not locate the strike zone, walking six batters - which allowed five runs to cross the plate. Jerrius Vickers finished off the first with a double play.

Wiley bounced back in the third. Julian Rosales walked with one out and Jacob Perez reached on an error. Armand Daigre, who made his first start, hit his first home run of the season to cut the margin to two. Ryan Ready reached on an error and advanced to second. He was stranded at third as the inning ended with a strikeout.

The Jaguars (3-0) scored a run on three hits. Rosales and Perez led off the fifth with singles. Houston-Victoria catcher Hal Perez threw out Rosales attempting to steal third. With two outs, Ryan Ready hit his first home run of the season to draw the Wildcats within one.

In the bottom of the fifth, they could not hold down the Jaguars, who scored four runs on three hits and an error. Three of their first four batters reached and a double brought home two runs. A two-out walk loaded the bases which set up a two-RBI base hit, which put Wiley in a 10-5 deficit.

Ivan Del Villar recorded two hits. Adrian Cindo made his first start and got a hit. Kai Woodard came in as a defensive replacement and singled in the ninth.

Ethan Jones, Jayden Rocha, Kadin Resendez and Corey Grant made their first appearances on the mound this season. Wiley walked 12 batters and struck eight.

The Wildcats will visit Texas College on Friday and Saturday for a three-game series.
