Baseball suffers Setback against Texas A&M-Texarkana
The defending Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season champion Wiley University baseball team struggled in the third inning of a 12-6 loss to Texas A&M University-Texarkana Wednesday at Coker Field.
Wiley University struck first with Jaziel Martinez hitting his first career home run in the second inning. The next inning, Wiley gave up six runs on four hits, three walks, a hit batter and an error. Keyon Guillory started and went 2 1/3 innings. The Wildcats used six pitchers. They walked eight batters and struck out 11.
Wiley trailed 9-1 entering the fifth inning. Laker McPherson singled with one out and stole second. He scored on an error. Ivan Del Villar cut the margin to four with a three-run home run for his fourth of the season.
Jacob Perez and Jhan Carlos Javier each recorded two hits. Perez scored a run along with teammates Ajari Camp and Ryan Clark, who courtesy ran for Brendan Mendoza when he walked in the eighth inning.
The Wildcats will continue their homestand on Friday when they open a three-game series against Louisiana State University at Alexandria. It will be the Generals first visit to Marshall since 2022 when they were conference opponents in the Red River Athletic Conference.
