Baseball drops opening games at LSU-Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, La. - Wiley University baseball struggled to put hits together as it was shut down in a 9-0 loss and could not build on an early lead in a 4-3 loss against Louisiana State University at Alexandria in its season-opening games Thursday at Generals Field.

The Wildcats (0-2) drop their season opener for the third straight year and fall to 4-6 in lid-lifters under head coach Kendrick Biggs. It's the second straight season they've been shut out in their opener. They open with consecutive losses for the third straight season.

Wiley only got one hit in the first game on a double by Orenthal Lewis in the third inning. He was picked off second. Its best scoring chance came in the fourth when Eddie Garza walked with one out and stole second. He advanced on Ivan Del Villar's ground ball to third and tried to score when the ball barely went by the first baseman and was thrown out at the plate.

Nick Rodriguez started and struggled with command. He walked five batters in one inning and didn't get help from his defense, which committed four errors. He was pulled after pitching to seven batters in the second inning. Manuel Contreras finished the second and tossed four scoreless innings and struck out four. Both runs he allowed were unearned. Case Butterfield made his debut and threw a scoreless sixth inning.

Biggs started a completely different lineup in the second game. Cameron McCoy led off with a single and advanced on Deekota Johnson's sacrifice bunt. After Jesse Jones reached on a hit by pitch, Tyson Minter laced the ball down the right field line, which scored McCoy and Jones scored on a throwing error, giving Wiley a two-run advantage. It added to its lead in the second. Xavier Sosa was hit by a pitch. McCoy bunted and reached on an errant throw by LSU-Alexandria's third baseman Trevor Dooley, which scored Sosa.

The Wildcats didn't get another hit the rest of the game. It had a scoring opportunity in the fifth when Johnson reached on a dropped pop fly and stole second. The next two batters struck out to end the inning. Skyler Nelson and Jose Villalobos were hit by pitches with two outs in the sixth. A strikeout ended the inning.

Ethan Jones made his first start and was solid. He only allowed one run on one hit and struck out six batters. The Generals first three batters reached in the seventh and cut the lead to one. Kadin Resendez took over and got an out on a sacrifice bunt, which brought home the tying run. After an intentional walk, a single up the middle scored the winning run.

Wiley continues its opening road swing at Louisiana Christian University on Friday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Louisiana Christian opened with 5-4 and 13-5 victories over Mid-America Christian University.
