Baseball falls short in series opener against No. 20 Texas A&M-Victoria
VICTORIA, Texas - Wiley University pitcher Nick Rodriguez delivered a strong performance in his second start against No. 20 Texas A&M University-Victoria but did not receive run support in a 5-2 loss Friday at Riverside Stadium.
The Wildcats (0-3) open with three consecutive losses for the third straight season and fourth of their last five. It's their fourth straight loss to the Jaguars as they fall to 7-25 in the series and 3-15 on the road.
After a rough first start, Rodriguez was much more settled in. He held the Jaguars scoreless in four of the five innings he pitched, including retiring the side in the second inning. He struck out two batters with one looking. Three of the four hits he allowed were in the fourth inning, which led to three runs. Juan Pena threw the last three innings.
Wiley outhit Texas A&M-Victoria, 7-6 but was unable to get the timely hits to bring runners home. Kaleb Gilner led off with a double but was stranded at third as two strikeouts ended the inning. Amir Mason led off the fourth with a walk, stole second and advanced on a ground ball, but was left at third as a flyout ended the inning. Trey Clark led off the fifth with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Two groundouts ended the inning.
Trailing by five in the ninth inning, Marshel Herman led off with a walk. Cameron McCoy pinch ran and stole second. A wild pitch moved him to third and an errant throw on a pickoff brought McCoy home. Clark walked and scored on a single by Johnny Barajas.
Eddie Garza and Clark each had two hits. Jose Villalobos had a pinch hit double.
The series resumes on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
