Baseball falls in final games at No. 20 Texas A&M-Victoria
VICTORIA, Texas - Wiley University baseball struck first in Game 2 but allowed seven runs in the next three innings in a 9-2 loss. They rallied from two deficits in the finale, only to fall 7-6 in 10 innings against No. 20 Texas A&M University-Victoria on Saturday at Riverside Stadium.
The Wildcats (0-5) open with five consecutive losses for the first time since 2022. They fall to 0-3 when scoring first and 0-2 in one-run games and walk-offs.
GAME TWO
Eddie Garza walked with one out in the first and stole second. A wild pitch advanced him to third, which set up Amir Mason to bring him home with a sacrifice fly to right.
The lead held until the bottom of the second. The first two batters walked. A double and a single brought home three runs. With two outs, Antonio Benitez hit an RBI double to extend the margin to three. The Jaguars batted a round with 10 batters coming to the plate.
Wiley gave up two runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the sixth. Ethan Jones went 4 2/3 innings in his second start. He allowed seven runs on five hits and walked five. Audreyous Bingham made his collegiate debut and got the final out of the fifth. Travis Belin made his collegiate debut and pitched the sixth.
The Wildcats only got two hits and didn't score until the seventh. Trey Clark led off by being hit by a pitch and stole second. After advancing on a ground ball, he scored on a wild pitch. Kaleb Gilner and Jose Villalobos singled.
GAME THREE
Head coach Kendrick Biggs completely changed his lineup for Game 3 after it struggled to produce in the second game. Jose Villalobos was the only starter who remained in the lineup.
Cameron McCoy led off with a walk and advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw by the catcher. He scored on Devin Gladney's ground ball to second. The lead held until the fourth inning.
Estevan Baca made his Wildcat debut and held the Jaguars scoreless in the first three innings. He struck out two batters and only allowed a couple of base runners. Jackson Purcell led off the fourth with a triple and tied the game scoring on a single. After getting a flyout, Baca allowed a walk and single to load the bases. Two singles brought home three runs.
Wiley got a run back in the fifth when Villalobos led off with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Deekota Johnson. Corey Grant took over on the mound and held Texas A&M-Victoria scoreless, only allowing a hit and struck out a batter.
Daniel de los Rios led off the seventh with a single. His courtesy runner Kaleb Gilner stole second. Markis Fontenot walked and Villalobos hit an infield single to load the bases. Gilner scored on a ground ball to short. Johnson loaded the bases, getting hit by the pitch. A balk brought home Villalobos to tie the game at four. Two strikeouts ended the inning.
Texas A&M-Victoria (5-1) took the lead back. Connor Kaiser walked. Jose Montanez hit the ball to the center field wall for a double to score Kaiser. His pinch runner Ty Boozer scored on a wild pitch to extend the margin to two.
Once again, the Wildcats fought back. De los Rios walked with two outs in the eighth. Fontenot picked up his first career hit with a double that went to the left field wall and brought home Gilner. With one out in the ninth, McCoy walked and Ajari Camp and Tyson Minter were hit by pitches to load the bases. McCoy tied the game at six on a wild pitch. A strikeout and groundout prevented the Wildcats from scoring the go-ahead run.
In his second inning of work, Coren Lewis retired the Jaguars in order to send the game to extra innings. He got a flyout and two groundouts to complete two scoreless innings.
Johnny Barajas led off the tenth with a single. He advanced to third on a passed ball and wild pitch. A strikeout and groundout ended the inning. Manuel Contreras threw the 10th but only got one out. A walk and wild pitch moved the go-ahead run to second. A double sealed the game.
Villalobos went 3-for-5 and scored two runs. McCoy reached base on three walks and scored two runs.
The Wildcats open their home schedule with a four-game series against Ecclesia College on Friday and Saturday at Coker Field.
