Baseball opens HBCUAC play against Huston-Tillotson
Wiley University opens Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) play against Huston-Tillotson University on Friday and Saturday at Coker Field.
Friday's doubleheader and Saturday's finale will both start at noon. The games will stream on the Urban Edge Network and live statistics will also be available.
The Wildcats (6-7, 0-0 HBCUAC) are looking to extend their five-game winning streak. They are coming off an 11-10 exhibition win over NCAA Division I school Grambling State University. Kaleb Gilner went 4-for-5 with four runs and hit a two-run home run in the second inning. Nick Rodriguez, Ethan Jones and Estevan Baca each threw a scoreless inning. Rodriguez has won his last two starts and earned HBCUAC Pitcher of the Week. He is tied for the conference lead with three wins and for fourth with 18 strikeouts.
Trey Clark leads the team with a .296 batting average. Amir Mason leads in runs batted in with 12, which is tied for second in the conference. He ranks fourth with seven stolen bases. John Barajas is tied for the lead in home runs with two. Kaleb Gilner is tied for fifth in the conference with 10 runs.
Wiley meets Huston-Tillotson for the first time since April 30, 2022, when they were both in the Red River Athletic Conference. Dating back to 2007, the Wildcats are 22-21 against the Rams and 15-14 when playing in Marshall.
The Rams (7-7, 0-0) are on a four-game losing streak. They were swept in a three-game series against Texas A&M University-Victoria and fell to NCAA Division I school Stephen F. Austin State University. Tucker Allen leads the Rams with a .347 batting average, nine RBI, 12 runs and a .490 slugging percentage. Alec Worden follows with a .321 batting average, six runs and four RBI. Preseason All-HBCUAC selection Noah Alvarez is second on the team with eight RBI.
On the mound, Ethan Walker leads the team with a 3.15 ERA. He is 2-1 and struck out six batters in 20 innings. Nathaniel Davila is 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA in five appearances and one start.
Since joining the HBCU Athletic Conference in 2022, the Wildcats have swept all three of their conference-opening series. This will be the third consecutive season they've opened conference play at home.
