Men's Basketball opens 2023-24 season against Arkansas Baptist

The Wiley College men's basketball team will hit the road for the 2023-24 season opener as it visits Arkansas Baptist College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

No coverage details were announced as of press time. This will be the third straight season that the Wildcats have opened on the road. Since 2006, They are 11-5 in season openers but are 0-4 when opening on the road.

Wiley College underwent a roster transformation in the offseason as only four players returned from last season's team which went 14-12 and advanced to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference semifinals. Shamir Mosley has the most playing experience out of the returners, appearing in all 26 games with three starts. He averaged 6.5 points and 1.5 assists per game. He scored in double figures in seven games. Also returning for the Wildcats are Christian Beeke, Chukwuemeke Nwaoshai and Robert Ogola.

Head coach Joseph Flegler brought in 13 new players with three freshmen and 10 transfers, including four from four-year colleges. Delor Johnson was a Second Team All-Red River Athletic Conference selection at Louisiana Christian University. Raymond Guillory averaged 15.8 points and five rebounds per game at Centralia College. Demarius Pitts earned the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Rookie of the Year at Virginia Union University.

The Buffaloes are entering their second season under the leadership of Eric Bozeman. They went 14-6 last season – including 4-1 in Continental Athletic Conference games.

Saturday's game will be the 17th meeting between the programs dating back to the 1967-68 season. Each team has eight wins. The Wildcats won both games last season with a 73-70 decision at home and a 71-64 victory on the road. The schools will rematch in Marshall on November 9.

The Wildcats enter their second season in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. It was picked to finish fifth out of 10 teams by the head coaches in the preseason poll.
