Men's Basketball faces Louisiana Christian in 2023 Homecoming Game

It will be a battle of Wildcats as the Wiley University men's basketball team hosts Louisiana Christian University for its 2023 Homecoming Game at 4 p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium.

Tickets are $20 online and $25 at the door. The game will be broadcast on HBCU+ Ch. 115. Live statistics will be available as well. The links can be found in the men's basketball schedule on wileyathletics.com.

The Wildcats (1-1) picked up their first victory of the season defeating Jarvis Christian University 78-73 in the 2023 Austin Area Urban League Historically Black Colleges and Universities Classic. They overcame a nine-point deficit in the last four minutes. Delor Johnson put up 36 points hitting on 14 of 19 field goal attempts. Demarius Pitts followed with 22 points on 9-for-17 shooting.

Louisiana Christian (0-1) opened the season with a 94-60 loss against NCAA Division I program Southern University on Tuesday. Omarion Layssard led the team with 13 points. Kylan Williams followed with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Last season, the Wildcats of Louisiana Christian finished 13-17 and reached the semifinals of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament. They return nine players from last season's team. Jude Akabueze is the returning leading scorer with 10.5 points per game and returning leading rebounder with 9.1 per game. Louisiana Christian's top assist leaders graduated. D'Marcus Fugett has the highest returning total with 1.7 per game.

Wiley University has some Louisiana Christian ties. Johnson and assistant coach Malik Cooper played for the Wildcats last season. Saturday will be the first battle of Wildcats. The teams were scheduled to play during the 2021-22 season but the game was canceled because Louisiana Christian didn't want to adhere to Wiley University's COVID-19 protocols.
