Men's Basketball holds off North American University

STAFFORD, Texas – Wiley University men's basketball player Delor Johnson scored 30 points to help the Wildcats to a 74-71 victory over North American University at Stafford High School Saturday.

The win is the third straight for Wiley, which also picked up its first road victory this season. Johnson hit 12 of 19 field goal attempts – including two of three 3-point attempts to record his second 30-plus scoring game this season. It's his fifth straight game which he has scored 20 or more. Johnson also contributed six rebounds and three assists.

Demarius Pitts followed with 14 points – scoring in double digits for the sixth straight game. He contributed six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Jalen Bates scored five points and recorded team-highs of 10 rebounds and seven assists. Tre Booker and Chukwuemeke Nwaoshai each had eight points. Booker added a rebound, an assist and steal. Nwaoshai provided three rebounds and an assist.

Both teams held leads in the first half. The Wildcats trailed by seven with 6:48 left. Two shots by Johnson and a 3-pointer by Pitts put Wiley ahead 25-23 a couple minutes later. Tre Booker hit a pair of 3-pointers to increase the lead to seven.

The Wildcats (4-2) pulled away in the second half. A layup by Johnson increased the advantage to double-digits. A 3-pointer by Pitts gave them its largest lead at 50-34 with 14:03 left in the game. Wiley missed four shots and turned it over twice – allowing North American to close the gap to four.

A second-chance bucket by Johnson and baskets by Nwaoshai and Pitts pushed the lead back up to double-digits. Wiley missed three straight shots and North American hit two 3-pointers to pull within two. It had a chance to tie at the free throw line but split its attempts. In the final seconds, NAU had three opportunities to tie the game but they were off the mark.

Wiley continues its road swing at Texas College on Friday. The Wildcats beat the Steers 79-65 at Alumni Gymnasium on November 7.
