Men's Basketball unable to stop Texas College

TYLER, Texas – The Wiley University men's basketball team was unable to maintain its first half lead in a 58-54 loss to Texas College Friday at Gus F. Taylor Gymnasium.

The loss ends a three-game winning streak. It is the Wildcats first loss against the Steers since January 23, 2020. They outshot the Steers 39.5 to 37.5 percent. Wiley outrebounded Texas College 32-29 but lost the turnover battle 16-11.

Delor Johnson led the Wildcats with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists. marking his sixth straight game with 20 or more. He also recorded a team-high four assists. Shamir Mosley followed with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists. Chukwuemeke Nwaoshai added four points and seven rebounds.

The Wildcats (4-3) took a 13-12 lead on a 3-pointer by Mosley with 9:47 left in the first half. Three steals helped them increase the lead to seven. Tre Booker's steal set up a layup for Johnson, who got his own steal and dunked it. Demarius Pitts' steal allowed Mosley to cash in at the free throw line. Texas College took advantage of two turnovers and a missed shot to pull within two with 3:42 left in the first half.

Three-pointers by Booker and Johnson increased the lead to eight. Pitts was fouled on a 3-point attempt and hit all three free throws to give Wiley an 11-point halftime lead.

In the second half, the Wildcats missed three of their first four shots and turned it over allowing the Steers to cut the margin to one. Wiley stayed in front until 7:57 left in the game. It was held scoreless for over five minutes which allowed Texas College to go on a six-point run and take a 48-45 lead. A layup by Johnson and a pair of free throws helped the Wildcats tie the game at 50 with 4:23 remaining.

Wiley University was unable to regain the lead. It missed on its last four shot attempts and turned the ball over three times.

The Wildcats will continue their road trip on Wednesday when it travels to Langston University.
