Pitts, Johnson win GCAC Weekly Honors

After averaging over 25 points per game and leading the Wiley University men's basketball team to two conference victories, Demarius Pitts wins Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week and Delor Johnson takes home Newcomer of the Week for November 27-December 3.

This is Pitts' second award and first Player of the Week Award. He was Newcomer of the Week for October 23-November 5. He recorded his second and third 20-plus point games this season. On Friday, he scored a career-high 30 points – hitting six 3-pointers with five coming in the second half. He helped the Wildcats overcome a 19-point deficit in the last eight minutes of regulation en route to an 89-81 overtime victory over Dillard University. Pitts scored 13 of Wiley's last 15 points in regulation, including a game-tying 3-pointer with 24 seconds left. On Saturday, he helped the Wildcats overcome a 14-point first-half deficit in a 73-62 victory over Southern University at New Orleans. Pitts scored 20 points hitting six shots. For the week he averaged 25 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.

Johnson earns his third award this season. He won Player of the Week for October 23-November 5 and November 6-12. He scored 26 points in the comeback win against Dillard University – hitting 10 shots, including a game-tying shot in overtime. He hit a jumper which helped seal the victory. In Saturday's victory over SUNO, Johnson led all scorers with 28 points – hitting 11 of 17 field goal attempts. For the week he averaged 27 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. Johnson leads the GCAC with 24.4 points per game.

Pitts and Johnson's performances helped the Wildcats open conference play with consecutive victories for the first time since 2016-17. They will visit Fisk University on Thursday and Oakwood University on Saturday.
