Men's Basketball hosts Talladega College
The Wiley University men's basketball team will play its first home Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game when it hosts the conference leader Talladega College at noon on Friday in Alumni Gymnasium.
The game will broadcast on HBCU+ Channel 115 which can be viewed online or the free application can be downloaded on a phone, tablet or Smart TV. Live statistics will also be available. The links can be found in the men's basketball schedule on wileyathletics.com.
The Wildcats (6-6, 2-2 GCAC) came up empty in last week's games with a 59-47 loss at Fisk University and an 83-73 loss at Oakwood University. They went 3-4 on their road trip. Demarius Pitts led the team in scoring with 19 points per game. For the season, he is averaging 15.9, which ranks seventh in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Pitts also ranks in the top ten with 1.5 steals per game. Christian Beeke averaged 10 rebounds per game and put up a career-high 11 against Oakwood.
After being held to eight points against Fisk, Delor Johnson put up 18 against Oakwood. He continues to lead the GCAC with 22.5 points per game. He also ranks in the top 10 of the conference with 1.7 steals per game. Jalen Bates continues to lead the conference with 4.3 assists per game. He tallied five assists against Fisk for his seventh game of five or more assists.
Talladega (10-1, 2-0 GCAC) is on an eight-game winning streak. Its opponents only average 54 points per game which leads the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The Tornadoes have only allowed one team to score more than 70. D'Andre Boyd is second in the GCAC with a 61.8 field goal percentage. He leads the Tornadoes with 10.1 points per game. Jevon Tatum ranks fifth in the conference with a 43.5 three-point field goal percentage. Wilfred Campbell ranks 10th in the conference with 2.5 assists and 1.4 three-pointers per game.
The Wildcats met the Tornadoes for the first time last season and came up short in a 71-52 loss in the Austin Area Urban League Historically Black Colleges and Universities Classic. Friday's game will be the first time they've played at Alumni Gymnasium and as conference opponents. The teams will play in Talladega on January 16.
