Johnson, Bates earn All-GCAC honors

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Wiley University men's basketball players Delor Johnson and Jalen Bates were recognized by the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball coaches for their superior play this season, as Johnson earned All-GCAC Second Team and Bates All-Defensive Team.

Johnson led the GCAC in scoring with 21.8 points per game. He recorded 20 or more points in 14 games, including two with over 30. Johnson led the conference with 8.8 field goals made per game. He also ranked in the top five with 1.7 steals per game. Johnson won GCAC Player of the Week twice and Newcomer of the Week once.

While Bates played a key role offensively, leading the conference with 4.5 assists per game, he was also a contributor defensively with 2.3 steals per game, which ranks second in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. He had 12 games with three or more steals. Bates averaged 5.7 rebounds per game as a point guard, recording two double-digit rebounding games.

The Wildcats earned the fifth seed in the 2024 GCAC Men's Basketball Championship and will take on Fisk University at 7 p.m. Friday. The game will stream on HBCU-Plus.
