Men's Basketball prepares for HBCUAC Basketball Championship Opener against Virgin Islands

On Thursday at Stillman College's Birthright Alumni Hall, the Wiley University men's basketball team will meet the University of the Virgin Islands in the opening round of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) 2025 Hope Credit Union Basketball Championship at 2 p.m. with the winner getting to continue its season.

The game will stream on the HBCUAC channel on the Urban Edge Network. Fans can view online or download the free app to their favorite streaming devices. Live statistics are also available. The links are listed in the men's basketball schedule on wileyathletics.com.

The Wildcats (9-13) earned the ninth seed after it struggled down the stretch, with one win in its last six games. Demarius Pitts finished the season ranked ninth in the conference by averaging 14.8 points per game. Pitts recently highlighted his prowess as he capped the regular season scoring 24 points against the Virgin Islands, marking his fifth 20-plus point performance. Additionally, Jalen Bates has been a central figure for Wiley University, leading in both offensive and defensive aspects with a conference-leading 2.5 steals per game, along with averages of 4 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game. Devon Barshow also remains a crucial contributor with an average of 13.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

The Buccaneers (10-12) earned the eighth seed with wins in its last three games. They are driven by standout players like Amayoa'ah Phillips, who finished the regular season second in the conference scoring an average of 23 points per game and won multiple HBCUAC weekly awards. Supporting him are Jalil Langston posting 13.4 points per game and Chad Molloy ranking sixth in the conference with 1.8 steals per game and tallying 10.9 points per game.

The winner will face the top seed and co-champion Stillman College at 8 p.m. Friday.

"This is a pivotal moment for our team, and I believe in my players' ability and determination," stated head coach Joseph Flegler.

The Wildcats have won their opening tournament game in three of their last four appearances. They will look to extend the seasons of their eight seniors Pitts, Bates, Barshow, Bobby Baker III, Tre Booker, Raymond Guillory, Taj Toney and Treagan Lockett
