Men's Basketball opens 2025-26 season with Homecoming Rivalry Showdown

Wiley University men's basketball tips off the 2025-26 season with a rivalry matchup against Texas College for its 2025 Homecoming game at 4 p.m. Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Wildcats are coming off a 10-14 campaign in 2024-25, which ended with them reaching the quarterfinals of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) championship. Four players return, led by Shamir Mosley, who enters his fourth season with the program. He is the leading returning scorer, averaging a career-high 8.3 points per game. Cortez Collins played in 23 games last season and is the top returning rebounder with 4.2 per game. He increased his production in the second half of the season with three double-digit scoring games and a double-double against Southern University at New Orleans. Ka'Leb Connors returns for his third season. He saw his most playing time with 10 games and looks to have a bigger impact this season. Caleibria McDonald played in 12 games, averaging 4.3 minutes per game.

Amoni Waring regained his eligibility and will get his first action since 2021. Shaquan Horsey, who joined the program last season, became eligible. Brayden Bradshaw and James Rudd Jr., who sat last season due to injury, make their return.

Head coach Joseph Flegler brought in 10 transfers and focused on adding size to better compete with the top schools in the conference. Ten players are over 6-foot-6. Flegler is entering his fourth season, the longest since Andre Payne coached the Wildcats from 2006 to 2014. He looks to get the Wildcats, who were projected to finish ninth by the HBCUAC head men's basketball coaches, into the upper echelon of the conference. Associate head coach Malik Cooper returns for his third season.

Texas College is coming off an emotional 2024-25 season, which included the death of their head coach. The Steers finished 7-19 and ended the season on an eight-game losing streak. Information about their new coach head coach and 2025-26 team was not available.

A rivalry that dates back to the 1930s, the Wildcats hold a slight edge in the series with a 43-31 record. The teams competed in the Red River Athletic Conference from 1998 until 2022, when Wiley left for the HBCU Athletic Conference. The schools last met in 2023 with each winning on its home court.
