Men's Basketball unable to hold off SUNO

Three Wiley University men's basketball players scored in double-digits, but a second-half scoring drought allowed Southern University at New Orleans to build a double-digit lead that the Wildcats could not overcome in an 83-77 loss in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) game Thursday at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Wildcats (1-9, 0-2 HBCUAC) open conference play with consecutive losses for the first time since the 2021-22 season. They haven't won since their season-opening victory on October 25. It is the second time they've allowed a first-half lead to slip away.

Donavan Seamster led all scorers with 18 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the field. He was 4-for-8 from 3-point territory as he scored a season-high. Cortez Collins followed with a season-best 16 points while adding seven rebounds and three blocks. LaBree Williams recorded his second double-digit scoring game of the season with 13 points on five made field goals.

In a competitive first half, Williams hit a 3-pointer off a pass from Mosley to put the Wildcats ahead in the last two minutes. LaRonte McHenry grabbed a defensive rebound and set up Ka'Leb Connors for a fastbreak layup. A steal by Connors set up Williams for a dunk. The Wildcats led 36-30 at halftime. They extended the lead to eight early in the second half. Four turnovers and two missed shots led to 12 unanswered points for the Knights, who took a 42-38 lead.

A dunk by Collins and a 3-pointer by James Rudd pulled Wiley within two. A foul and two turnovers allowed SUNO to push the margin to nine. With 10 minutes left, it was only able to hit one field goal in a five-minute stretch. The Wildcats missed six shots and committed two turnovers. The Knights took advantage and increased the margin to 16.

Seamster hit two threes and James Rudd Jr. made one to bring the margin to single digits. Waring hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to four with 28 seconds left. That's as close as the Wildcats got. They were outshot 46 to 44.8 percent but shot better from 3-point territory, hitting 10 to only six for the Knights. Wiley held the edge on the boards 42-36. It had 20 turnovers, which led to 27 points for SUNO.

The Wildcats continue HBCUAC play against the defending postseason HBCUAC champion Dillard University at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Bleu Devils lost 92-78 against Philander Smith University in a rematch of last season's championship game on Thursday.
