Men's Basketball suffers heartbreaker against Dillard

Wiley University men's basketball overcame an eight-point second-half deficit, but could not finish off the defending Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) postseason champion Dillard University in a 67-62 loss Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Wildcats (1-10, 0-3 HBCUAC) fall to 1-6 at home. They allow a first-half lead to slip away for the third time this season.

With 9:43 left, Wiley trailed 51-43. Amoni Waring started a rally with a 3-pointer. Brayden Bradshaw and James Rudd Jr. converted a pair from the free-throw line. Bradshaw hit a jumper to give Wiley its first lead of the second half. The Bleu Devils hit three straight shots and took a six-point lead with 6:50 remaining. Shaquan Horsey cut the margin to one with a 3-pointer. He got a steal, which set up Rudd for the go-ahead layup. Dillard retook the lead, but a second-chance dunk by Cortez Collins put the Wildcats in front 61-60 with three minutes left.

Wiley didn't make another field goal. It missed its last four shots and committed four turnovers. This allowed Dillard to score seven of the last eight points. In the first half, the Wildcats led by as many as six points. Caleibria McDonald scored a second-chance putback. Donavan Seamster stole the ball and dished to Bradshaw, who laid it to give them a 34-28 lead with 4:17 left. Dillard took advantage of two empty possessions by the Wildcats and tied the game. Rudd Jr. hit a 3-pointer to put Wiley ahead 37-34 at halftime.

Both teams shot under 40 percent. The Wildcats were outshot 39.3 to 35.5 percent. They shot better from beyond the arc, hitting 10 of 30 three-pointers, while Dillard shot 6-for-23. Wiley was outdone on the boards, 46-36 and 28-16 in paint scoring. It won the turnover battle 17-15, outscoring the Bleu Devils 25-14 in points off turnovers.

Bradshaw led the Wildcats with 14 points. He hit five shots, including two 3-pointers. Rudd followed with 11 points, four rebounds and four assists. Amoni Waring made his first start and tied his career-high of 11 points. He added two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Collins contributed six points and a team-high 10 rebounds and two blocks.

Wiley will host Philander Smith University on December 13. The Panthers remain unbeaten in HBCUAC play with an 82-66 victory over Southern University at New Orleans.
