Ulloa's late goal lifts Men's Soccer over Texas Wesleyan
Wiley University men's soccer player Anthony Ulloa set up the game-tying goal in the first half and blasted a shot from 40 yards away to the back of the net to lift the Wildcats to a 2-1 victory over Texas Wesleyan University Thursday at Pemberton Field.
The Wildcats (1-1-0) avoid opening with consecutive losses for the first time since 2017, which was also the last time they defeated the Rams. It's their first victory when allowing the opponent to score first since October 12, 2023.
After allowing Texas Wesleyan to get on the board in the 17th minute, Ulloa found Aaron Castillo making a run to the net. Castillo kicked it past the goalkeeper to even the match in the 33rd minute. The game remained tied until the 80th minute. Ulloa was fouled, which set up his game-winning shot.
"I practiced that shot a thousand times with my goalkeepers Kevin (Nievas) and Daniel (Rojas)," Ulloa said. "I'm grateful for them working with me. Practice makes perfect."
Wiley edged Texas Wesleyan 13-12 in shots. Both teams put five shots on goal. Ulloa led the team with six shots and four on goal. The Wildcats had more corner kicks with six to the Rams' four. The match was very physical, with 23 fouls called and five yellow cards issued.
Nievas picked up his first career victory. He stopped four of five shots, making three crucial saves to keep the match tied.
The Wildcats will hit the road for the first time in 2025. They wil visit their Highway 80 rival Jarvis Christian University on Wednesday.
