Second Half Goals lead Men's Soccer over Jarvis Christian
HAWKINS, Texas - Wiley University men's soccer players Diego Rivas and Aaron Castillo score in the second half as the Wildcats hold off Jarvis Christian University 2-1 on Wednesday at Wendon L. Blair Field.
The Wildcats (2-1-0) win their second consecutive match and are off to their best start since 2017, when they won eight of their first nine matches. They improved to 5-1 against the Bulldogs.
The first half was scoreless. Both teams put a shot on goal. Anfernee Bascombe saved a ball from going in when Kevin Nievas got caught outside of the net. Aaron Castillo had a shot in the 20th minute that was stopped by Jarvis goalkeeper Moises Schrader.
In the second minute of the second half, Alvaro Guerrero set up Rivas, who put the Wildcats on the board with his first career goal. Ian Hernandez kicked a ball downfield, which found the feet of Castillo, who scored his second goal of the season, increasing the lead to two in the 54th minute
Jarvis (0-3-0) cut the lead to one in the 63rd minute. It had an opportunity to tie the match in the 78th minute, but Nievas stopped the shot. The match was very chippy, with nine yellow cards and one red card issued.
The Wildcats will continue their road swing on September 13 when they visit Texas A&M University-Texarkana.
