Men's Soccer unable to capitalize against No. 10 William Carey
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Wiley University men's soccer generated three scoring chances, but they were all turned away in a 5-0 loss against No. 10 William Carey University Friday at Danny Owens Field.
The Wildcats (2-3-1, 0-0-0 HBCUAC) drop consecutive matches for the first time since losing five straight between September 14 and October 5, 2024. It's also the first time they've been held scoreless in consecutive contests since October 26, 2023, and August 22, 2024.
Wiley fell behind in the fifth minute after allowing three shots on goal. Kevin Nievas stopped the first two, but the third one found the back of the net. Anthony Ulloa had a chance to tie the match but it was turned away by William Carey goalkeeper Jamie Barry. The deficit was extended to two in the 19th minute. The Wildcats were outshot 12-2 in the first half and 7-1 in shots on goal. Nievas made five saves to keep them in the game.
The offense picked up in the second half, as Wiley put up seven shots with two on frame. Ulloa had a shot hit the post in the 54th minute. He had another scoring chance in the 60th minute but it was stopped by Barry. Ulloa led the Wildcats with four shots and two on goal. Shortly after, the game was delayed due to lightning. The Crusaders seized the momentum when play resumed with their third goal in the 65th minute. Wiley allowed two more in the 80th and 82nd minutes. It was outshot 21-9 and 10-3 in shots on goal.
The Wildcats return to action on September 26 when they visit Arlington Baptist University.
