Garrett qualifies for NAIA Championship, several place
LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Wiley University men's track and field team gained its first 2024 NAIA national championship qualifier as Ronald Garrett surpassed the 'A' qualifying standard in the 110-meter hurdles Saturday at the Cowboy Relays "Bob Hayes Challenge" hosted by McNeese State University at the Bill and Lena Track and Field Complex.
In his collegiate debut, Garrett finished in 14.58 seconds, which was .02 seconds faster than the 'A' standard. His time was fourth in a 16-man field, featuring mostly NCAA Divison I runners. Garrett also won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.75, topping 11 athletes. In the winter, Garrett was also a national championship qualifier during Indoor Track and Field season.
The 4 x 100-meter relay team of Micah Ruben, Garrett, Kemarrius Mayes and Harold Overton finished third out of seven teams. Ruben was runner-up in the long jump with a distance of 6.85 meters.
Freshman Brian Fisher placed in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Tyvonne Allen also placed in the 400-meter hurdles. Isaac Jenkins and Christian Lacy placed in the long jump. Xavier Hutchinson finished in the top eight in the triple jump and javelin. The 4 x 200-meter relay team of Jenkins, Lacy, Camron Gibson and Armani Perry-Brown placed. The Wildcats finished fifth out of 12 teams with 50 points.
Wiley will head to the Jim Mize Invitational hosted by Louisiana Tech University next week.
