SHREVEPORT, La. - The Wiley University men's track and field team performed excellently at the 2025 Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship at Lee Hedges Stadium on Friday and Saturday. It secured victories in three events and had multiple athletes earn All-HBCUAC honors, ultimately finishing in fourth place.
The Wildcats scored 107 points. Voorhees University won the title with 217 points. Talladega College and Dillard University followed with 160 and 116 points, respectively.
Wiley's first victory was on Friday when the 4 x 800-meter relay team of Ameariun Harper, Jaden Cole, Jaylon Donson and Javoun Goldsby defended their title with a time of 8:29.60. After trailing the first two legs, Donson put Wiley ahead in the second lap of his leg, and Goldsby finished it off. On Saturday, Goldsby picked up another gold with his victory in the 5,000-meter run. He finished in 19:09, 18 seconds faster than the runner-up.
Ronald Garrett picked up the Wildcats' second event win on Saturday, taking the 110-meter hurdles at 14.59 seconds, 0.09 from the 'B' qualifying standard. He finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best of 54.95 seconds. Garrett also placed in the 100-meter dash.
The top three finishers in each event earned All-HBCUAC. Donson finished runner-up in the 800-meter run (1:59.60). Cole finished third in the 1,500-meter run (4:28.80). The Wildcats finished third in the 4 x 100-meter relay with Kemarrius Mayes, Garrett, Xavier Hutchinson and Kelvin Jackson Jr. running.
Hutchinson, who won the previous two javelin titles, finished runner-up with a distance of 46.30 meters. He also placed in the high jump and triple jump. Caleb Benefield, who competed in his first conference championship placed in the javelin and threw a personal best 17.87 meters in the discus and 9.07 meters in the shot put.
The championship was the last scheduled meet for the Wildcats. Head coach Christopher McConnell might find another meet to give Garrett another chance of advancing to the 2025 NAIA Men's Outdoor Track and Field National Championship.
