Softball opens first season in decades against Nelson University

For the first time in over 20 years, Wiley University softball is opening the season with a doubleheader against Nelson University with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday at the Lions Athletic Complex.

The game will be streamed on Nelson University's GameChanger Account. Live statistics are also available and listed in the softball schedule on wileyathletics.com.

The Lady Wildcats begin their first season under associate head coach Jour'Dan Gardner, who joined the athletic coaching staff after coaching 10 years at Lancaster High School. Wiley competed as a club team last season and return seven players: catcher and third baseman Miranda Castaneda, corner infielder and outfielder Dajah Montgomery, outfielders Alayna Parram and Gwendolyn Johnson and utility players Dyniste Lacy, Sabriiyah Young and Serenity Smith. Gardner helped bring in seven newcomers with five freshmen and six transfers.

Nelson defeated Oklahoma Wesleyan University 2-1 on Friday for its second win in three games. Elena Mendez leads the team with a .360 batting average. She scored two runs and drove in one. Haley Ehlert leads the Lions with a .462 slugging percentage. Two of four hits were doubles. She leads the team with four RBI.

In the circle, Mendez is 1-2 in three starts with a 3.07 earned run average. She struck out seven batters in 13 2/3 innings. Valerie Guzman is 1-1 in four appearances with a 6.30 earned run average. She has seven strikeouts in 10 innings pitched.

The teams met at Airport Park during Wiley's club season last year. This matchup begins a new era of Wiley Softball.
