Softball falls to Nelson
WAXAHACHIE, TEXAS - A new era of Wiley University Softball began Friday when centerfielder Gabriella Thomas stepped up to the plate against Nelson University pitcher Elena Mendez. The Lady Wildcats opened with 11-0 and 8-0 losses Friday at the Lions Athletic Complex.
The games were the first for the Lady Wildcats since the early 2000s. Sariya Calhoun picked up their first hit with a two-out double in the first. Kyrra Boone led off the third with a single but was caught stealing. Wiley was retired in order in the fourth and fifth.
Jazmine Rodriguez made her first start in the circle. She gave up 11 runs on 11 hits and struck out one batter. Wiley allowed two runs in the first on three hits and an error. It allowed two in the second on three hits.
Serenity Smith started in the circle for the second game. She held the Lady Lions scoreless in the first three innings. She gave up five runs on four hits in the fourth. Nelson scored another run in the fifth. Rodriguez took over in the circle with two outs in the fifth. Four hits and an error in the sixth allowed the Lady Lions to seal the game.
Wiley didn't get a hit until the sixth inning when Rodriguez led off with a single. Jenevieve Fleming walked in the third. Smith was hit by a pitch in the fourth. The Lady Wildcats didn't get a runner in scoring position.
They will open Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference play at Talladega College on February 21-22.
