Softball falls short against Voorhees

BAMBERG, S.C. - Wiley University softball could not hold on to two late leads in a 5-4 extra-inning loss. It bounced back with a dominating 8-4 victory but fell 12-11 in the finale against Voorhees University in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference series (HBCUAC) Saturday and Sunday at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School.
The Lady Wildcats (3-8, 3-6 HBCUAC) drop their second consecutive HBCUAC series. They fall to sixth in the conference standings.
 
SATURDAY
GAME 1
T'era Garrett led off with a single and took second on a ground ball. An error brought her home. Voorhees took the lead in the fourth on a double and a triple. With one out in the sixth, Alayna Parram and Dyniste Lacy singled. A groundball by Miranda Castaneda moved them to scoring position. Sariya Calhoun brought both of them home with a single to take a 3-2 lead.
 
The Tigers (4-13, 4-5 HBCUAC) tied it up. An error, a hit batter and a two-out walk loaded the bases. A single brought home the tying run. Jazmine Rodriguez got a flyout to end the inning.
 
Only one batter reached in the seventh inning. Starting the inning with a runner on second, a ground ball by Lacy brought home Garrett to put the Lady Wildcats back in front. Rodriguez got a strikeout to start the bottom of the eighth. A walk and a single loaded the bases. Two base hits secured the game for the Tigers.
 
Rodriguez went the distance and struck out a career-high four batters.
 
GAME 2
Wiley scored five runs in the first three innings. Jeneieve Fleming hit an RBI single in the second. Kyrra Boone hit an RBI single in the third. Fleming drove in another run in the third on a sacrifice fly. In the fifth inning, Lacy hit an RBI single followed by a two-RBI single by Adriauna Coleman to extend the lead to eight.
 
In position to claim a run-rule victory, the Lady Wildcats were unable to close it out. Two hits, two hit batters, two walks and an error allowed the Tigers to extend the game with four runs.
Smith retired the last eight batters she faced, striking out three. She only allowed two hits. Coleman went 2-for-4. Garrett went 2-for-5. Gwendolyn Johnson scored two runs.
 
SUNDAY
GAME 3
Wiley struck for six runs in the first inning off seven hits and an error. The first four batters reached base. Ma'Kiya Miles put Wiley on the board with an RBI double. Castaneda brought home two with a double.
 
Voorhees bounced back with four runs in the second and three in the third to take a one-run lead. The Lady Wildcats retook the lead in the fourth inning. With one out, Parram singled and stole second. A base hit by Garrett brought Parram home. With two outs, Gwendolyn Johnson hit the program's first home run in the new era, putting Wiley on top 9-7. In the fifth inning, Castaneda led off with a walk, advanced on two groundouts and scored on a single by Parram.
 
The Tigers cut the lead to one with two runs on two hits. They tied the game in the sixth with a run on two walks, a hit and a hit batter. Castaneda gave Wiley the lead with her first home run. It was one strike from sealing the deal, but Ni'Asia McCall drew a walk, and the ball went to the backstop, allowing the tying run to score. Two singles ended the game.
 
Parram went 4-for-5 and scored two runs. Garrett went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Johnson went 2-for-4 with two runs. Castaneda went 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.
 
The Lady Wildcats allowed 16 batters to reach either by walk or hit by pitches.
 
Wiley will return home for a non-conference doubleheader against National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III school University of Dallas. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
