Softball takes series against Rust

HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. - Wiley University softball rallied from a seven-run deficit to take the series opener 11-9. It took the lead in the third inning and didn't look back in a 5-2 win to clinch the series before falling 17-8 in the finale against Rust College on Saturday and Sunday.
The Lady Wildcats (5-14, 5-10 HBCUAC) win their second Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) series. They improved to 5-9 on the road.
 
SATURDAY
GAME 1
Wiley struck first with an RBI double by Dyniste Lacy and an RBI single by Gwendolyn Johnson. It allowed four runs on four walks, two hit batters and two errors. Rust added three runs in the second and two in the third to increase the margin to seven.
 
A two-run inside-the-park home run by Alayna Parram and an RBI single by Lacy cut the deficit to four. Johnson reached on a fielder's choice and Gabriella Thomas singled. Both runners stole bases to move into scoring position. With two outs, Jazmine Rodriguez drove them in with a single. Parram and T'era Garrett followed with singles to load the bases. Lacy hit an RBI single and Miranda Castaneda cleared the bases with a go-ahead three-run double.
 
Lacy went 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Garrett hit 3-for-4 with two runs. Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with three runs. She earned her second victory, tossing 6 1/3 innings in relief, holding the Lady Bearcats scoreless in the last four innings.
 
GAME 2
Sariya Calhoun reached on a two-base error by the left fielder in the third inning. Garrett brought her home with an RBI single. The Lady Wildcats extended their lead in the fourth. Ma'Kiya Miles led off with a triple and scored on a double by Johnson. Thomas brought Johnson home with a double. Miles added a two-RBI triple in the seventh.
 
Miles and Johnson each got two hits. Eight of nine of Wiley's hitters recorded base hits.
 
Rodriguez threw her fourth complete game. She held Rust to an earned run on nine hits and struck out three for her third win of the season.
 
SUNDAY
GAME 3
 
With Rodriguez still recovering from a shoulder injury and the Lady Wildcats having a doubleheader on Monday, Associate Head Coach Jour'Dan Gardner started Lacy in the circle. Wiley struck first with an RBI triple by Garrett and a sacrifice fly by Lacy. It gave up six runs on four hit batters, two walks, two hits and an error.
 
Wiley's pitchers allowed seven walks and nine hit batters. Three fielding errors were too much to overcome. The Lady Bearcats scored two in the second and eight in the third. Lacy threw 1/3 of an inning. Johnson tossed 1 2/3 innings. Garrett pitched the last two innings.
Adriauna Coleman went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Parram went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Eight of nine starters recorded RBI.
