Rodriguez wins HBCUAC Pitcher and Freshman of the Week, program's first awards in New Era

After leading Wiley University softball to its second Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) series win with a strong performance in the circle and at the plate, Jazmine Rodriguez takes home HBCUAC Pitcher and Freshman of the Week.

This is the first conference award winner since the program's rebirth. She threw 6 1/3 innings in relief in the series opener on Saturday. She held Rust scoreless in the last four innings, which helped the Lady Wildcats rally from a seven-run deficit. She struck out a career-high seven batters. At the plate, Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. She hit a two-RBI single to spark the seventh inning rally. In Game 2, Rodriguez threw her fourth complete game and allowed an earned run on nine hits and struck out three. In the finale, she had an RBI base hit. She ranks third in the conference with 34 strikeouts.

The Lady Wildcats host Grambling State University on April 7.
