Women's Basketball Rolls Past Saint Thomas
The Lady Wildcats of Wiley College ended a long road trip with an impressive (81-58) victory over the Celts of St. Thomas Saturday night in Houston.
Two days earlier, the Lady Wildcats endured a 13-hour bus ride to Hobbs, New Mexico, to dominate the Mustangs of the University of Southwest,94 – 46, running the recent win streak to 6 games.
The overcast Saturday started out with Head Coach Courtney Garrett- Pruitt and her resilient group dealing with the loss of Sha'Georgia Williams from a ruptured ovarian cyst.
"The girls were so close that I was concerned about our ability to put it behind us and take care of business", Garrett-Pruitt said. The team looked sluggish in the first half ;and that, coupled with an inconsistent whistle, made every Wildcat fan anxious.
Leading 36 – 33 at the half, Coach Garrett-Pruitt and the Lady Wildcats came roaring out of the halftime break with renewed focus and determination not to allow the hostile crowd or inconsistent whistle to affect them. With brilliant floor leadership from Senior Kalya Brown and timely aggressive play from Houstonian Kirby Clark, the Lady Wildcats showed no mercy as they put on a demonstration of why they should be one of the top ten teams in the nation.
The Lady Wildcats got balanced scoring from: Kiera Oby, 16 pts 6 rebounds; Kayla Brown, 15 pts; a double double from Kirbi Clark- 12 pts & and 14 Rebounds; and Bianca Davis and Gelese Lampton both chipped in with 11 points.
Coach Garrett-Pruitt was very happy with the workman like effort the team put in Saturday. "This team still has not met its potential," Garrett-Pruitt said. "We have yet to play two halves of Wiley basketball, but I see positive signs for this team."
The Lady Wildcats return to action this Friday, hosting LSU- Alexandria at 5:30 p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium.
