Women's Basketball falls short against Fisk
NEW ORLEANS – The Wiley College women's basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit in the first half but were unable to pull out a victory in a 76-71 loss against Fisk University in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game Saturday at Southern University at New Orleans' The Castle.
The Lady Wildcats (11-6, 2-4 GCAC) lose consecutive games for the first time this season. The Lady Bulldogs extended their winning streak to five games and remain a game behind the conference leader No. 25 Rust College.
Wiley College trailed 35-21 with 2:31 left in the second quarter. It went on a 10-point run with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws by Alaeh Pressley and four free throws from Kayja Jackson. Mya Allen drained a shot just in front of half court to give Fisk a 38-31 halftime lead.
Minnie Miller pulled the Lady Wildcats within one – hitting a 3-pointer with 4:35 left in the third. They were unable to gain the lead. Kaitlyn Davis hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 55 with 17 seconds left in the third. Kayja Jackson gave the Lady Wildcats their first lead of the game with a layup on the opening possession of the fourth. Fisk retook the lead with 7:48 remaining on a 3-pointer by Kendall Wilson.
With six minutes remaining, Tamia Dolls put Wiley College ahead 64-63 on a jumper. She stole the ball to set up a jumper by Davis. The Lady Bulldogs reclaimed the lead on a jumper by Daigeona Guinn with 2:52 left in the game. The Lady Wildcats were unable to answer.
Davis led the Lady Wildcats with 18 points. She hit six shots with three from 3-point territory and added three steals, two rebounds and two assists. Nasserine William and Kayja Jackson followed with 11 points each. William contributed two rebounds, two steals, two blocks and two assists. Jackson provided six rebounds. Pressley finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Diamond Hawthorne recorded a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with seven points.
The Lady Wildcats will conclude their second pod against the host Southern-New Orleans at 5 p.m. tomorrow. The Lady Knights were crushed by Rust College 86-41.
