Women's Basketball downs Southern-New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS – Wiley College women's basketball player Kaitlyn Davis scored 20 points to lead the Lady Wildcats to a 70-63 victory over Southern University at New Orleans in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game Sunday at The Castle.
The Lady Wildcats (12-6, 3-4 GCAC) snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 6-2 in road contests. The Lady Knights are still seeking their first conference victory as they dropped their 11th straight game.
Davis went 8-for-13 from the field, including one 3-pointer. It was her second game with 20 or more points. Minnie Miller followed with 13 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. All 10 Lady Wildcats scored. Kewaysha Alsup put up a career-high 6 points and four steals. Elizabeth Camacho tallied a season-high six points and six rebounds. Fifteen of Wiley College's 27 field goals were assisted.
Wiley College started slow as it missed eight of its first nine shot attempts which allowed the Lady Knights to take an 11-2 lead. With 4:38 left in the first, Nasserine William scored and was fouled. Davis converted a three-point play to cut the margin to five. Alsup gave the Lady Wildcats the lead from the free throw line.
Southern-New Orleans (2-11, 0-6) tied the game early in the second quarter. Camacho gave the Lady Wildcats the lead back on a second-chance basket. Ashunti Cooper stole the ball and hit a jumper to increase the lead to six. Davis increased the lead to nine with a 3-pointer.
In the second half, the Lady Knights pulled within four. The Lady Wildcats didn't allow them to get closer. They outshot Southern-New Orleans 39.1 to 36.9 percent. Wiley College was outrebounded 48-37 but won the turnover battle forcing 24 and only allowing 15.
The Lady Wildcats will return to action on February 3 in a rematch against Dillard University at Tougaloo College. Wiley College beat the Bleu Devils 52-48 on the road on January 15.
