Women's Basketball bounces back against Tougaloo College

JACKSON, Miss – The Wiley College women's basketball team pulled away in the second quarter to defeat Tougaloo College 78-67 on its Homecoming Saturday in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game at Kroger Gymnasium.

The Lady Wildcats (13-7, 4-5 GCAC) improved to 7-2 in road games and moved into a tie with Dillard University for fourth. Tougaloo College falls to sixth after dropping its fifth straight home game.

For the fourth consecutive game, Kaitlyn Davis led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 16 points. She hit five of nine field goal attempts, including three of four 3-point attempts. Davis moved into fourth-place in program history in career 3-pointers made. Alaeh Pressley followed with 13 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Tamia Dolls scored a career-high 12 points while adding four assists and three rebounds. Nasserine William scored 10 points off the bench.

Wiley College outshot Tougaloo 43.1 to 37.1 percent. It shot a higher percentage from 3-point territory – draining seven while the Lady Bulldogs only hit one of 16 attempts. The Lady Wildcats outrebounded them 39-34.

Tougaloo (4-13, 3-6 GCAC) started with the lead. Dolls tied the game with a 3-pointer. Davis gave the Lady Wildcats their first lead with a 3-pointer. The lead changed hands several times. Kayja Jackson put Wiley College in front with three minutes left in the first. William extended the lead with a basket and a pair of free throws. The Lady Wildcats led 21-17 after the first quarter.

Davis hit two 3-pointers at the beginning of the second quarter to push the lead to double-digits. Kewaysha Alsup hit a three. William stole the ball which set up Jackson, who scored while being fouled. She hit the free throw to extend Wiley College's lead to 37-21 with 4:03 left in the second. It held a 44-29 lead at halftime.

The Lady Wildcats led by as many as 17 in the second half. A dry spell in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter allowed Tougaloo College to close the gap to four. Davis ended the drought. Pressley scored while being fouled to push the lead back to double digits with 4:52 left in the game.

Wiley College will close the pod at noon tomorrow against Fisk University. It defeated Dillard 64-57 on Saturday.
