Third quarter shooting woes stymie Women's Basketball
JACKSON, Miss. – The Wiley College women's basketball team struggled to hit shots in the third quarter of a 75-58 loss to Fisk University in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game Sunday at Tougaloo College's Kroger Gymnasium.
The Lady Wildcats (13-8, 4-6 GCAC) lose to Fisk for the second time this season and drop to 2-6 in neutral games. The Lady Bulldogs move within a game of the conference leader Rust College and extend their winning streak to three.
Wiley College was outshot 38.8 to 29.7 percent. It was outrebounded 45-37 but won the turnover battle 15-12. Diamond Hawthorne led the Lady Wildcats with 17 points and nine rebounds. Nasserine William made her first start and tallied 12 points and six rebounds. Kewaysha Alsup posted a career-high 11 points and three rebounds.
The Lady Wildcats led by as many as four. They didn't make a field goal in a four-minute stretch which shifted momentum to Fisk, which claimed a four-point lead. A 3-pointer by Alsup and a basket by Hawthorne gave Wiley College a 24-23 advantage with 3:50 left in the second quarter. It missed six of its next seven shot attempts and trailed 36-31 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Lady Wildcats were held scoreless for over three minutes – which allowed Fisk to increase the margin to 14. They trailed by as many as 26 in the fourth quarter.
Wiley College will close out the regular season at home beginning with a three-game pod on Friday through Sunday. It will host Southern University at New Orleans on Friday, Oakwood University on Saturday and Tougaloo College on Sunday.
