Women's Basketball closes homestand against Centenary
The Wiley University women's basketball team will wrap up its opening homestand against Centenary College of Louisiana at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Alumni Gymnasium.
The game will be broadcast live on HBCU+ Channel 115. It can be viewed online https://watch.hbcu-plus.com/ or the free application can be downloaded on a phone, tablet or Smart TV. The Lady Wildcats (4-1) picked up their third straight win with a 61-55 victory over Arkansas Baptist College on Thursday. For the second time this season, they overcame a fourth quarter deficit. It's also the third game which they held their opponent under 60 points.
Wiley University was outshot 39.6 percent to 33.8 percent. It was outrebounded 41-37 but outrebounded the Lady Buffaloes 13-9 on the offensive glass. The Lady Wildcats won the turnover battle, forcing 28 and committing 15.
Jamiya Eaddy led all scorers with 15 points and led the team with eight rebounds. She also added three assists and two steals. Ashunti Cooper followed with a career-high 12 points. She hit two key 3-pointers which helped the Lady Wildcats rally. Kiersten Harris led the team with six assists while contributing nine points, five rebounds and four steals.
The Lady Wildcats trailed 43-39 entering the fourth quarter. Cooper hit a jumper with less than eight minutes left to pull Wiley within two. With 6:35 left in the game she hit a 3-pointer to give them the lead. Eaddy added a 3-pointer to extend the advantage to four. With 1:29 left, Cooper extended the lead to seven with a 3-pointer.
Centenary College (0-1) opened the season on Wednesday with a 72-51 loss at Jarvis Christian University. Layla Powell and Alana Jones led the team with nine points. Jones had a team-high six rebounds. The Ladies are in their second season under the leadership of interim head coach Paul Reed. Last season they finished 3-22.
Saturday's game will mark the 11th meeting between the Lady Wildcats and Ladies. Wiley has only won four of 10 meetings, including two victories last season.
