Women's Basketball unable to hold off Louisiana Christian

PINEVILLE, La. – The Wiley University women's basketball team was unable to hold on to its first half lead in a 73-60 loss against Louisiana Christian University Monday at the H.O. West Fieldhouse.

The Lady Wildcats (5-3) drop their third straight road game. They were outshot 36.8 to 34.4 percent and outrebounded 52-37. Wiley lost the turnover battle 22-20. It was outscored 17-10 in points off turnovers and 32-22 in points in the paint.

Diamond Hawthorne recorded her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Ashunti Cooper recorded her second double-digit scoring game with 10 points. She added four steals, three rebounds and two assists.

After trailing early, the Lady Wildcats took the lead on a layup by Diamond Hawthorne. Cooper hit a 3-pointer, Elizabeth Camacho made a layup and got one at the free throw line. Wiley led 22-18 after the first quarter. It led by as many as eight after a layup and one by Hawthorne.

In the third quarter, the Lady Wildcats only hit 3 of 14 shot attempts and missed all four 3-pointers. Louisiana Christian took advantage of Wiley's shooting woes and took a five-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

Wiley pulled within one on baskets by Asia Foster and Alayia Francis. It turned the ball over three times and missed three shots. This allowed Louisiana Christian to increase the margin to seven. The Lady Wildcats were unable to rally only hitting two shots in the last four minutes.

They will return home on Tuesday to open Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play against Talladega College.
