Women's Basketball edges Talladega in GCAC opener
On a night where points were hard to come by, Wiley University women's basketball player Jamiya Eaddy hit when it mattered most – drilling a 3-pointer in the final seconds to lift the Lady Wildcats to a 41-40 victory over Talladega College Tuesday in their Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opener at Alumni Gymnasium.
Wiley (6-3, 1-0 GCAC) picked up its fifth straight win at home and third fourth quarter comeback. It wins its conference opener for the third time in the last four seasons. Neither team shot above 30 percent, as the Lady Wildcats were outshot 27.1 to 26.8 percent. They only made five of their 28 three-point attempts – three were in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Wildcats trailed 34-30 with 5:09 remaining. Tamia Dolls hit a 3-pointer off a pass from Kiersten Harris. Cailan Hale dished to Harris who hit from the corner of the key to put Wiley ahead 35-34. It would miss its next four shots and turned the ball over, which allowed Talladega to take a five-point lead with 1:34 left.
Jay'lann Myles hit her second 3-pointer with 46 seconds left to trim the margin to two. Wiley got a stop and had a chance to tie or take the lead but missed. Harris fouled with 15 seconds left to give the Lady Wildcats another chance. Talladega missed both free throws and Diamond Hawthorne got the rebound. She passed to Hale, who gave the ball to Harris – who threw across court to Eaddy in the corner – setting up her game-winning shot.
Eaddy led the team with 11 points. She added three rebounds, two steals and an assist. Hale recorded her third double-digit scoring game with 10 points – contributing eight rebounds and an assist. Hawthorne led the team with nine rebounds and two blocks, recording her second game with multiple blocks. Harris led the team with five assists – which is her third game with five or more. Myles tallied a team-high three steals.
The Lady Wildcats will continue GCAC play with a four-game road trip starting Friday at Dillard University.
